Flat Niamh's Journal from Ma'alaea-Friday January 28, 2011

Friday Afternoon                                                                                January 28, 2011

Headed off to Ma'alaea to Beach Bums Restaurant, but didn’t make it in time for breakfast. Seems we left a little late and they stop serving breakfast at 11AM. There is a great lunch menu, so no worries. Yes, lunch was delicious and there are a lot of fun shops here. Check out my new grass skirt and the great view!

During the winter, humpback whales breed in this warm Hawaiian bay. Many whale-watching cruises and Molokini snorkeling charters depart from the Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor located there. Whale watching season has started and will run probably thru March. I have seen several whales breach  (jumping out of the water) on our drives around the island, maybe next time I will go out on an excursion boat to get a close up look.

At Ma'alaea Bay is the Maui Ocean Center, which has an amazing aquarium. More than 60 exhibits emulate the animal's habitat in the natural ocean, including the Underwater Journey where you can experience a tunnel that offers a 240-degree view of marine life in a 750,000-gallon open ocean tank.

Made our way back to Haiku. What clouds? Check out the beautiful 78° afternoon,  a backyard blue sky view. I might consider moving to Maui, but that thought will have to wait until another day. Tomorrow is my travel day back to the “Mainland” and I have a little packing to do. Hope for a few more sights in the morning.

Mahalo,
