Flat Niamh's Journal Entry from Phoenix, Arizona

Flat Niamh made a jaunt through the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts and across the Colorado River to visit Niamh's cousin Brady in Phoenix, Arizona.  We measured the distance between Simi Valley and Phoenix (as the crow flies): 386.28 miles/621.66 km.  Here's a picture of the map we created with Google Earth, you can clearly see the Colorado River:

Here are a few interesting facts about Phoenix

Phoenix  (pronounced /ˈfiːnɪks/ FEE-niks, O'odham Skikik,  Yavapai Wasinka,  Western Apache Fiinigis,  Navajo Hoozdoh,  Mojave Hachpa 'Anya Nyava) is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Arizona, as well as the fifth most populated city in the United States.

The population of Phoenix is 1,601,587 according to the 2009 census.

Phoenix has extremely hot summers and warm winters. The average summer high temperature is the hottest of any area in the United States besides Death Valley, which is the hottest of any major city in the United States, and approaches those of  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and Baghdad, Iraq . The temperature reaches or exceeds 100°F (38°C) on an average of 110 days during the year, including most days from late May through early September, and highs top 110 °F (43 °C) an average of 18 days during the year. On June 26, 1990, the temperature reached an all-time recorded high of 122 °F (50 °C).

Phoenix residents are known as Phoenicians.

Flat Niamh went to Parent Pick-up at Brady's school.  This is Flat Niamh meeting Brady at the gate for pick-up.  He was a little shy for the camera, but Flat Niamh seems to love the camera.

This is Flat Niamh at Aunt Shirley's and Grandy's house going horseback riding with Chad.  She was very nervous, but went riding anyway.  Turns out she is quite the horse rider (quarter horses that team rope and barrel race).

This is Flat Niamh with Aunt Shirley and Jake the dog (Aunt Shirley's dog).  We made Chicken and Dumpling soup that day and brought it over for Aunt Shirley and Uncle Shag (he was napping) to have for dinner.

Then Brady and Flat Niamh went for a ride on the Razor and on the tractor.  I think that Flat Niamh liked the Razor better.  It went faster and was a lot less complicated to drive.

Then, of course, we had to go next door to see Grandy and the other dogs (Roo and Piper).  Grandy is that special kind of Grandma. She helped Brady make his Flat Stanley and Flat Arthur (Arthur never gets flat, but Brady did not want Stanley to ever be without his brother).

Brady wanted to make sure that you had a photo of the two of them in front of our home.  However, it is a bit difficult to get the entire house in the picture and be able to see both of them in the picture together (they are both so tiny).

In these photos Flat Stanley, Flat Arthur, and Flat Niamh are helping Brady with his daily homework.

However, Brady wanted to record a special message for Niamh about Flat Niamh having travel companions for her to keep with her forever.

I hope all is well.  We wanted to let you know that Flat Niamh will be coming home very soon.  She really wants to see her best friend, Niamh!

We are looking forward to seeing Flat Niamh and welcoming Flat Stanley and Flat Arthur.  Thank you so much Brady and Beth for being such hospitable hosts.  It looks like Flat Niamh had a great time!
